Seeking Houston Venue

We need a venue with a PA system on August 16th for a few experimental bands with no money. I don't usually book free gigs unless they benifit a good cause, but a friend asked me a favor so I'm putting my feelers out there. All the usual places are already booked. Please PM me if you have a place where my buddies can jam. Expected attendance of about 40-50 people. Thanks!

Ingebrigt Håker Flaten (born 1971 in Oppdal, Norway) is one of the most important figures in creative music in Norway – and elsewhere – today.

Coming from a musical family of six sisters and brothers, and a father who played the organ, he started to play piano and guitar at an early age. He switched over to the bass guitar, playing in a gospel choir in his hometown when he was 12. At 18 he moved to norwegian city Trondheim, where he picked up the acoustic bass, and decided he wanted to study at the music academy there, a school that has shaped many of the influental figureheads of the norwegian contemporary scene today. In 1992 he got into the school, and studied there for three years with bassplayer Odd Magne Gridseth, saxophonist Jon-Paal Inderberg and pianist Erling Aksdal.

Since 1995 Ingebrigt Håker Flaten have been a professional musician based in Oslo, and have been an important musician in leading scandinavian bands such as The Source, Element, Maria Kannegård Trio, Petter Wettre Trio, and between 1997-04 toured the world with the famed norwegian keyboard/piano player Bugge Wesseltoft and his New Conceptions of Jazz. Together with Bugge he performed with internationally established artists such as John Scofield (US), Joshua Redman (US) and Eric Trufaz (FRA).

Today Ingebrigt Håker Flaten have released more than 40 recordings and is focusing his work in Atomic, The Thing with Mats Gustafson, Atomic/School Days, Scorch Trio with Raoul Björkenheim, The Electrics with Axel Dörner, Free Fall with Ken Vandermark, Close Erase with Christian Wallumrød, Tore Brunborg Kvartett and is regulary doing solo performances.

Ingebrigt Håker Flaten..s creative and highly original bass playing has been highly regarded all over the world and he have done several performances with major international artists such as Evan Parker (UK), Paul Lytton (UK), Joe McPhee (US), Joe Lovano (US), Yusef Lateef (US), Tony Oxley (UK), Iain Ballamy (UK), Dave Liebman (US), Chris Potter (US), Zim Ngqvana (SA), Benoit Delbeq (FRA), Dr.L.Subramaniam (IND), Billy Cobham (US), Jean Luc Pounty (FRA). He has frequently appeared at important international jazz festivals in Den Haag, Liége, Montraux, Athens/Georgia, Cape Town, Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal, Paris, Istanbul, Saalfelden, Nice, Groningen, San Francisco, San Sebastian, Lüc, Nancy, London, Perpignan, Molde, Perth, Kongsberg, Berlin, Houston and legendary clubs such as New Morning in Paris, Quasimodo in Berlin, Ronny Scotts and Pizza Express in London, Knitting Factory and Tonic in New York, Empty Bottle in Chicago, Blue Note in Yokohama and Hemlock Tawern in San Francisco.

His musical expression is based on the language of jazz and improvised music, acoustic and electronic, but his interest in rock and ethnic music also shows through his collaborations with the norwegian rock bands Motorpsycho and Cato Salsa Experience as well as his work through Rikskonsertene
In July 2003, as the first bass-player in Norway, he released his solo-CD "Double bass" on the norwegian label SOFA.

He has at the tender age of 33 already managed to establish himself as one of the most important exponents of the younger generation of musicians on the european scene today. In July 2004 Ingebrigt Håker Flaten was awarded Kongsberg Jazzfestival official "Vitalprisen" – the highest award for jazz musicians in Norway.

Experimental music has a home in midtown – or at least it’s been invited crash there for a couple of months . . .

Iconoclastic noise, exploratory improvisation, hypnotic droning, and authentic "musique brut" have for decades been strong undercurrents affecting movement in Houston’s music (and art). They deeply impact what we hear and feel on the surface. But these scenes (or phenomena – underground music is often not coming from a ‘scene’) also produce many of Houston’s most well-known musical exports (unbeknownst to most Houstonians – even in the music and “cultural arts” communities).

“They, Who Sound” will offer two sets sampling a diverse range of underground music in Houston (with a potential for visiting artists as well) in the cozy environs of Backroom (the space behind The Mink). These shows are not to be missed. These events are early, there’s a bar and it’s on the train route!

Pioneers of European free improvisation, Han Bennink and Peter Brotzmann made a landmark statement together in 1968 with "Machine Gun", the incendiary recording by the Peter Brotzmann Octet. The two continued their groundbreaking collaboration in duo, trio, and quartet settings. After 12 years, the contrast between Brotzmann's severe intensity and Bennink's gleeful anarchy had run its course. In 1980, they went separate ways, playing the last concert of their fruitful 12-year collaboration.

In 2004, Brotzmann organized a series of performances to reunite the duo after a 24-year hiatus. Time added perspective to the work of both artists. Though he still turns up the high heat, Brotzmann now reveals a lyricism at heart of his fury. Bennink's physicality is still prominent; but he has shown himself to be an heir to the tradition of the great swing drummers like Baby Dodds, Jo Jones, and Max Roach.

An art student with connections to the Fluxes movement, Peter Brotzmann rejected a career in the galleries after hearing a concert by jazz legend Sidney Bechet. Self-taught on saxophones and clarinets, Brotzmann played modern jazz influenced by Ornette Coleman and worked with American greats like Don Cherry and Steve Lacy. He was crucial at the beginning of Europe's free improvisation movement. Brotzmann developed a style similar to radical American saxophonist Albert Ayler (without much knowledge of Ayler), an uncompromising, screaming cry that challenged itself to greater heights of rage and energy. Time added subtlety to his sound. Bluesy lyricism and timeless muezzin-like calls emerged in later years. He is one of the most influential saxophone players in free improvisation.

One of the hard swinging drummers in jazz and improvised music, Han Bennink has a reputation as an anarchic and electrifying performer. Well known for his physicality and sense of humor, Bennink's concerts lie somewhere in the realm of virtuosic percussion display and dadaist performance. He is famous for coaxing unusual sounds from his drums, augmenting his kit with found debris, and drumming on any surface available (walls, floors, chairs, his own body). In Holland in the 1960s, Bennink was quickly recognized as an uncommonly versatile drummer. He accompanied visiting jazz greats like Sonny Rollins, Eric Dolphy and Dexter Gordon. At the same time, Bennink helped to create a European improvised music that evolved an identity separate from its jazz roots. His collaborators in the worlds of free jazz and improvisation include most of the important artists in the music: Don Cherry, Misha Mengelberg, John Tchicai, Evan Parker, Derek Bailey, Steve Lacy, Eugene Chadbourne, and many others. Bennink has also performed with the punk rock band the Ex, with whom he has done two tours of Ethiopia.

Tetuzi Akiyama (Japan) - acoustic guitar
Jozef van Wissem (Holland) - renaissance lute

YOU KNOW YOU WANNA GO TO A FREE CONCERT WITH A RENAISSANCE LUTE!!!

When: Wednesday, January 30 , 2008 at 8 pm

Where: A site-specific performance at
The Byzantine Fresco Chapel Museum
4011 Yupon at Branard, Houston, TX (map)

Tickets: The concert is free of charge

Nameless Sound and The Byzantine Fresco Chapel Museum, in cooperation with The Menil Collection, presents:
Tetuzi Akiyama (Japan) - acoustic guitar
Jozef van Wissem (Holland) - renaissance lute

An artist of starkly contrasting styles, Tetuzi Akiyama gained international recognition as a member of Tokyo's "onkyo" scene of improvisers in the late 1990s. A groundbreaking and highly influential group, the onkyo musicians are known for zen-like subtlety, quietness and a remarkable use of silence. Akiyama's music can have these qualities, but his connections to blues and folk have always been clear. His acoustic performances are delicate, beautiful and expressive, often sounding like an intersection between country blues and traditional Japanese music.

Jozef van Wissem probably plays the most unlikely instrument in the world of contemporary improvised music: the Renaissance lute. He has accomplished the strange feat of bridging the idiom of seventeenth century lute literature and twenty-first century free improvisation. Van Wissem has largely stayed faithful to the particular timbre, resonance and playing technique of the lute. Van Wissem first came to be noticed a few years ago because of his conceptual approach to Renaissance lute music: he deconstructed existing compositions, for instance, by playing them backwards. He also composed his own pieces for lute, using palindromes and mirrored structures. His music therefore does not have a traditional linear progression, nor does it lead to a climax; rather, it stays at the same level of intensity. His music is quiet. It doesn't so much demand concentrated listening, but it brings the listener into a state of concentrated listening—an aspect that makes Van Wissem a natural partner to Akiyama's zen-like blues.

The Byzantine Fresco Chapel Museum was opened in February 1997. Intimate in scale, the Chapel Museum is the repository in the United States for the only intact Byzantine frescoes in the entire western hemisphere. These masterworks from the 13th century—a dome and an apse—were stolen out of a chapel near Lysi in the Turkish occupied section of Cyprus in the 1980s, cut into pieces and smuggled off the island by thieves prepared to sell them piece by piece. The fresco fragments were rescued from the thieves by The Menil Foundation with the knowledge and approval of the Church of Cyprus, the rightful owner of the frescoes. The Menil Foundation then funded a painstaking two-year restoration of the paintings. Numerous private donors helped fund the construction of the Chapel Museum, which combines rough stone, opaque glass and rich woods to extraordinarily spiritual effect. The Church of Cyprus is allowing a long-term loan of the frescoes in the building designed especially for them by architect François de Menil.

Concert Announcement:  Cooper-Moore Trio

Cooper-Moore Trio:
Cooper-Moore - piano, hand-crafted instruments
Forbes Graham - trumpet, electronics
Nioka Workman - cello

Saturday, January 19, 2008
8pm
Barnevelder Movement/Arts Complex
2201 Preston, Houston TX

The work of Cooper-Moore is a testament to commitment, vision, spirit, compassion, and invention. Born and raised in the Piedmont Area of the Virginian Blue Ridge Mountains, Cooper-Moore played piano in churches as a child prodigy. In the early 1970's he moved to New York, and began his association with the fertile and revolutionary "loft scene" of underground jazz, collaborating with such musicians as David S. Ware, Marc Edwards, and William Parker. An accomplished composer and virtuosic piano player, Cooper-Moore quit public performance in 1981, depriving the creative music world of a unique and vital talent. He dedicated himself to youth, working intensively with a variety of communities. He has developed and implemented his own music curriculum; and has been sent around the country by Head Start to teach it to others. For the last 25 years, Cooper-Moore has assisted the disabled, the incarcerated, the at-risk, and the underserved; affecting them with his passion and understanding of personal and community progress through creative work.

In the early 90's, Cooper-Moore returned to public performance and was discovered by a new generation of fans. His unique talents were a revelation. He is a renaissance man, whose performances encompass honest and insightful storytelling, wide-ranging explorations on hand-made instruments, and intensely virtuosic piano playing. Cooper-Moore is the quintessential "unsung hero". He is an artist who understands the urgent need for unique voices. He delivers on his commitments, both in the community and on the stage.

This Tuesday! Nah'na Belly Dance presents - Belly Boudoir

Nah'na Belly Dance invites you to step back to the turn of the twentieth century for a rare and intimate peek into the belly dancer's boudoir.

Inside our dressing room you'll experience the cheekiness of vaudeville, the sultriness of the gypsy, and the grace of the folkloric improvisational ensemble. Experience the rich sounds of live drumming and violin from our friends in Gypsy Dance Theater. Become enthralled by some of their finest dancers as they join us in celebrating the most secret of places - the dancer's dressing room. So bring your zaghareet, grab a nightcap from the bar and join us for this saucy, sexy, and singularly unforgettable performance. Make sure you get a good seat for this one time show at Avant Garden on November 20th at 9:00 p.m., because when the last song ends, the boudoir doors close for good.

~Nah'na

Look for other Nah'na dates and themes at Avant Garden every month!

World Premeir Dance Event- Sisters of Avalon invite you to join them 'In the Garden of Gaia'

World Premier Dance Event
Sisters of Avalon present “In the Garden of Gaia”

HOUSTON, TEXAS 3 July 2007 - Sisters of Avalon will premiere their theatrical dance production, "In the Garden of Gaia", at the University of St. Thomas Jones Hall auditorium on August 11. The evening promises to be a fascinating dance event merging the worlds of tribal belly dance, flamenco, and gypsy dance into a dramatic creation celebrating the progression of life.
Sisters of Avalon, led by Artistic Director Angela Flores, is a Houston-based collective comprised of dancers from a wide array of cultural and artistic backgrounds. Creativity, community and sisterhood have brought them together for this unique collaboration. "Presenting a new choreography for a theatrical dance production is definitely a stressful task, but these women have worked so hard. Dance is their passion and it really shows in their performances," states Flores.
Inspired by the Old World sounds of San Antonio musicians E Muzeki, this original dance production brings to life the mythical garden of Gaia and leads the audience through the death and rebirth of its changing seasons.
The cast consists of some of Houston's most innovative and talented dancers including members of Mahalla Tribal Fusion as well as both past and present members of Urban Gypsy. Dancing to recorded music of E Muzeki, the evening promises to be something very special.
Please join us "In the Garden of Gaia" for a unique journey.

Attention Local Performers!

There's been some talk about the possibility of opening up a remote office in Texas for Velocity Circus Troupe. Got local talent? Send me a message. Right now I'm looking for ALL circus acts (contortionists, stilt dancers, jugglers, aerialists, acrobats/gymnasts, fire artists, dancers, walk around characters, fortune tellers, henna artists, etc.), technicians (lights, music, safety, etc), stage managers, stage hands, costume designers, makeup artists...basically everything entertainment involves. I'm looking at a 1-year time line until a launch party in Houston (possibly sooner depending on interest). This is a professional level arts and entertainment company, so developed material is a plus.

Full Day Festival runs from 2:30 - 9pm

*** Detailed List of all events & schedule below the
ART SUBMISSION DETAILS & guidelines .

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
ART SUBMISSION DETAILS & guidelines =
1] ART may be abstract or recognizable subject,  but we reserve the right to reject any work   which in our subjective opinion does not represent Positive Affirmations relating to the values
of Peace which EarthDance represents. ARTIST MADE PRINTS ARE ALLOWED,
BUT ALL ART SHOULD BE ORIGINATED FROMTHE ARTIST.
This includes computer generated or  ink-jet printed from artist's own work.
NO PRINTS FROM OTHER SOURCES.   ALL COPYRIGHTS ARE RESPECTED.
Any artist who misrepresents their work is liable to copyright law.
Some examples of such work relating to peace might include images
which show, symbolize or DIRECTLY evoke high awareness and respect for:
~  Nature     ~    Wildlife    ~  Diversity  ~  Cultures ~
~ Children ~ Elders ~  Life Stages  ~  Connections ~
~ Indigenous Peoples ~  Elements ~ healing ~ humanity ~
~   EarthDance special focus for 2006 is
Respect for  FIRST NATIONS people (NATIVE AMERICANS) ~
2] ART MEDIUM & SIZE -  All are acceptable, and efforts will be made to show all work received that meets
acceptability requirements within our restricted space.
3] ART READINESS = All materials must be ready for showing. No wet paint or any wet surfaces.
Art with chalk, pastels, or any materials which can lift, beerased, or create dust should be sprayed
with fixative at least 1 dayprior to the day of the Festival to allow for drying.
= 2-DIMENSIONAL ART SHOULD BE READY TO HANG.  Generally this means a picture wire securely
attached across the back low enough to not show when hung and strong enough for the weight of the
particular piece.
= FRAMES are not required. FOR PAINTINGS ON STRETCHED CANVAS, many
artists create a finished look by painting the visible edges.  It is RECOMMENDED that
art on other surfaces be framed for the protection of the art and to allow for hanging,
but art may also be placed on illustration board.   Some artists then place their work
in plastic envelopes, sleeves, or shrink wrap for protection until the buyer purchases
a frame.
4] ART DISPLAY   - We will attempt to hang all art that is ready to hang. However, we reserve the right to determine how to display each piece. Large artmay be set on the floor against a wall. Small Items may be stood or laid on a table. Our choices in presenting the art may be determined by how it is readied for display.
5] ART DROP OFF & PICK UP - THIS IS A ONE-DAY SHOW. ARTISTS ARE REQUIRED TO PICK UP ANY ART THEY DROPPED OFF WHICH HAS NOT SOLD ON THE NIGHT OF THE EVENT. All art not picked up on time is subject to disposal. If an artist has someone else picking up their art, written and signed notification is requested, so we do not give your art
away to the wrong person!
*****************
We hope you will participate in the entire festival!
This is the easiest way to make sure your art is handled properly.
*****************
If you are interested in helping with the art auction
please notify :           sydneystrahan@hotmail.com
*****************
7] FEES, ART PRICING, DONATIONS, ARTIST % =
THERE IS NO FEE TO ENTER THE ART AUCTION.          However, we do request you come to the event.
The suggested donation for every festival goer is $10.   It would be greatly appreciated for every art participant to contribute this minimal donation amount.
= ART PRICING. This is a silent auction and meant to be both a fundraiser for EarthDance Houston and an opportunity for local Houston  Artists to be recognized and sell their art.
We recognize that artists deserve to be paid for their work. EarthDance Houston will receive 40%of any art sale, and the Artist will receive 60%. The artists should set their own bottom
price INCLUDING THE 40% to EarthDance Houston.
EXAMPLE - ARTIST BOTTOM PRICE IS $60. So artist sets a bottom bid of $100.
If the art sells for the bottom bid, EarthDance Houston receives $40 and Artist receives $60.
Of  course, bidding can rise according to interest of buyers.
=   Moderately priced items are often easier to sell, but we are open to any price range work.
8] * INSURANCE & RESPONSIBILITY BELONG TO THE ARTIST.   ARTIST WAIVES ANY LIABILITY TO EarthDance Houston & Ecstatic Dance Houston in case of damage or loss from any cause &/or theft, or in the case an artist breaks copyright law. While we do not foresee such situations  - nor have any history of such in prior events held by us -   each artist must consider the personal and professional value of each item to self in making such decision.
[EMAIL FOR ENTRY FORMS to fireUrchin@gmail.com ]
10] ART SALES & ARTIST PAYMENTS -          ALL SALES WILL BE COMPLETED ON THE EVENT NIGHT, PAID IN FULL
BY THE BUYER BY CASH, CREDIT CARD OR CHECK.   If sold, ARTIST will receive 60% payment of selling price for their art.      Checks will be issued from Ecstatic Dance Houston TWO WEEKS after the event.
11] OPTIONAL - BIO &/or additional ART INFORMATION -   Potential Art Buyers are often interested and possibly swayed to purchase by interesting details about the story behind the art or theartist.  Please add this info if you desire, neatly typed.
Preferably on a  4X6 inch postcard or smaller.   Attach to the art in some way that it can be seen from the front  -
or so  that we can remove it  easily at the time of arranging the display - and tape to the wall or table.
THE LAST ORGANIC OUTPOST @ FREE RANGE STUDIOS
THE LAST ORGANIC OUTPOST @ FREE RANGE STUDIOS
Our Mission
Our mission is to activate & participate in a regional plan to establish Sustainable Agriculture Settlements.  With weather changes and a world in conflict, we as a community need to come together and develop resources in our areas for self-reliance.
www.lastorganicoutpost.com
NEWS
Great changes are happening!
New Space!
The Last Organic Outpost has found a new location to build a community center to support our efforts to create urban agriculture for the greater Houston area.  We now occupy a 2500 sq. ft. space at Free Range Studios to host:
Music
Poetry performances & storytelling
Live food pot lucks
Drumming
Movies to Inspire!
Our aim is to use this space to further the efforts of urban agriculture for the greater Houston area. It is our heartfelt desire to continue to develop an organic farming community here in Houston and you can help.
We are planning to continue the garden in the 5th ward on Inman Street. These Sunday evening gatherings will include a fundraiser/donation component to secure the insurance policy necessary to continue the garden/farm operations.
Our first events will be drumming and live food pot lucks every Sunday evening starting at 7 pm at our new location: 1719 Live Oak Street, Unit E @ Jefferson and Nagle in the 3rd ward near University of Houston.
Ways To Help
1. Drumming And Live Food Pot Luck:  Our first event will be a next Sunday evening July 30th starting at 5:30 pm.
This Sunday evening 7/30 will include a fundraiser to pay for the $2000 required insurance to continue the garden/farm operations.
Sunday evening will be all about juicing, so bring yummy fruits & greens to juice! (This past Sunday we juiced watermelon and veggies, delish).  We are creating a juice bar to support our events & we would love for you to experience your fruits & veggies in a new way.  Aaron and Ankah have secured a water system that they will be showing Sunday evening as well with great information about the water that we drink & why this water system rocks!
In case you can’t make it, we figured out that if everyone receiving this email makes a donation of only $5, then we can meet the needs of insurance and much of the maintenance for the garden for the next year!!!
So please contribute even if you can’t come on Sunday.  All cash donated is tax deductible. Make checks payable to The Last Organic Outpost and mail to Joe Icet, 1719 D Live Oak Street, Houston, TX, 77003.
2. Volunteering At The Garden: We urgently need volunteers to keep up the garden at the Outpost in the 5th ward.  Contact Joe @ 713.261.5903 to coordinate digging up dirt & helping out with the community gardens.
3. Donating Items: We are creating a wonderful space for future events.  If anyone has:
Tables
Chairs
Refrigerators
Fans (we have plans to air condition the space but for the time being…the larger the fan the better!)
New Partnership with Lightway Schools!
Light Way Schools is a new paradigm in education for our Indigo and Crystal children opening next summer in the Montrose area.  The founders, Zara a.k.a. Amanda and Max, have partnered with us at this critical juncture in the growth of our enterprise to build the sustainable agricultural community in Houston.   Their vision of healthy organic diets to support the growth of our children makes them ideal partners. A plot of land has been donated to their school to turn into an organic garden! We are very excited to be a part of this special project.
Next Sunday afternoon, Lightway Schools are having a movie event showing of The Secret (1pm) and One (3:30 pm) at the Aurora Picture Show theatre in the Heights.  For details visit www.lightwayschools.org/lightwayevents or email Zara or Max at zara@lightwayschools.org and max@lightwayschools.org.
Thank You
I would like to state my gratitude once again to everyone who has kept the Outpost alive, especially Sydney Strahan, Ecstatic Dance Houston & Alafia for the huge community we shared over the last 7 months. I want to thank Ankah & Aaron for the new space at Free Range where we are fixing to generate a new base for community raw food potlucks, cinema screenings, world music drumming, dancing and urban farming.
Huge thanks to Debbie Heim whose help in this transition includes traveling all the way from Fort Worth 3 times in the last month.  Debbie's time and energy has been unbelievable.
Our partnership with Light Way Schools is only the beginning. We hope very soon to be partnering with others to build more gardens.  Thanks for your support and helping us build a huge community embracing our needs.
Please e-mail or call us to let us know how we can better serve Houston & keep the community alive!
All beneath a great sky,
Joe Nelson Icet
I ran into this awesome gal named Katherine who works at The Center for Success and Independence.  It's a place for kids ages 13 (I think) to 17 who are on probation and recovering from drug addiction.  She was looking for artists, writers, and musicians who would spend a few hours with the kids on a Sunday hanging out and sharing your craft.  An aquaintance of mine who is a DJ took some records and showed them how to spin.  Another aquaintance plans to work with them on silk screening.  If you have a craft and think you'd like to participate, plese drop me a line and I can get you connected.  THANX!
Trailer: http://thecelestineprophecymovie.com/celestine/trailers/index.php
Based on James Redfield's worldwide best-selling novel, The Celestine Prophecy is a spiritual adventure film chronicling the discovery of ancient scrolls in the rainforests of Peru. The prophecy and its nine key insights predict a worldwide awakening, arising within all religious traditions, that moves humanity toward a deeper experience of spirituality.
what do ya'll think about creating an art show 4 this tribe?
I'm just kicking an idea around here, but I was thinking it'd be cool to create an art show.  You know, accrue a place, sling some creations around, strike up a dj/band/bongos, drink some wine, etc, etc.  Anyone down... for at least talking about it?
